Verse to DATE the Word on May 6 (5/6) is Romans 5:6

“For when we were still without strength, in due time
Christ died for the ungodly.” – Romans 5:6
Christ Died for YOU, an ungodly sinner!

As the Apostle Paul lays out the great work of Christ in the book of Romans, he explains what Christ did and why Christ did what He did, and for whom He did what He did.  Far more than just dying an awful, excruciating death on a Roman cross He died for a reason, a purpose, dying for and dying in place of the ungodly.  Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were YET sinners Christ died for us!”

Our verse to DATE should stir up immense devotion and love for our SAVIOR. Pause to consider the depth of love God has for you.  As Romans 5:7 says, it is hard to believe that one would die for a righteous person or even die for good person, yet Jesus dies for the UNGODLY!  What a SAVIOR He is.

As a reminder of what He did recall the words from the song O Glorious Day:
One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain
One day they nailed Him to die on a tree
    Suffering anguish, despised and rejected
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He
Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree
And took the nails for me
    Living, He loved me
    Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
    Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He’s coming Oh glorious day, oh glorious day!

What a Savior He is!  What a salvation He provides!

Verse to DATE the Word on May 6 (5/6) is Romans 5:6. It says, “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

  • Verse to DATE the Word on May 5 (5/5) is Luke 5:5

Verse to DATE the Word on May 5 (5/5) is Luke 5:5

“But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”” – Luke 5:5
Choosing to TRUST and OBEY What He Says

Various stories in the Bible help us to see the real-life struggles of trusting and obeying the Lord. The story of Jesus telling Simon Peter (a professional fisherman) to launch out into the deep and drop his nets for a catch is one of those stories.  To get the full understanding of the struggles and then the surrender notice Luke 5:1-4.  It says, “So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the Word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”

Simon Peter, the professional fisherman has just heard an order from a carpenter that goes against what Peter knows about fishing.  Peter responds with a REASON that what Jesus just said will not work.  They had already been fishing and had come up empty.  And coming up empty as a fisherman is embarrassing.  This order to go fishing in the wrong place at the wrong time looked to Peter that he was going to be embarrassed again. So he tells Jesus, his master,  “Master, we have toiled (labored, wore ourselves out) all night and caught nothing.”

I see myself and maybe you see yourself sounding like Peter as Jesus tells us what He wants us to do.   I KNOW what works and what does not work.  I KNOW what looks absurd and ridiculous and yes what is impossible.  I am thinking you have been there with God.  Maybe you are there at this very moment.

What do YOU do when God tells you to do what appears to be absurd, ridiculous, and impossible?

I think this story is so helpful as we struggle with what God wants us to do.  We can learn from Simon Peter how he made the decision to TRUST and OBEY what seems absurd – ridiculous – crazy – impossible.  His decision starts with one word and that word is NEVERTHELESS.  “Nevertheless” reveals a change, a change of thinking.   Peter is going to TRUST that Jesus knows best.

Make no mistake Luke 5:5 is a major moment in the development of Simon Peter’s faith. With the word “NEVERTHELESS,” he moved to the level of TRUSTING AND OBEYING.

If we are going to OBEY Jesus there will be a crucial moment where we have to TRUST Him.  We will have to decide to stop believing that we know what is best and decide that HE KNOWS BEST.  It is not easy. The struggle is real.  That is why you will have to say NEVERTHELESS!

Verse to DATE the Word on May 5 (5/5) is Luke 5:5.  It says, “But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word, I will let down the net.”

Are you facing a NEVERTHELESS moment right now?  Let Peter’s story of struggling with doing what Jesus said encourage you, encourage you to TRUST AND OBEY.

Oh BTW, don’t miss the results of trusting and obeying.  Luke 5:6 “And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking.”  What Jesus said would happen did happen.

Continue Strong TRUSTING AND OBEYING JESUS

  • Verse to DATE the Word on May 4 (5/4) is 1 John 5:4

Verse to DATE the Word on May 4 (5/4) is 1 John 5:4

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the
victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” – I John 5:4
One of the areas that we must be victorious over is the world.  Breaking the power of the world in our lives is our FAITH. As believers, we do not walk by sight but by faith! We see the one who is invisible! We see life from an eternal perspective, not a temporal perspective. When we think about the temptations of the world we must remember that the things of the world and its lust will PASS AWAY. Recall that earlier John wrote this admonition in 1 John 2:15 writing, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

The transformed life that is conforming to the image of Christ rather than the world happens as we activate FAITH. We take the step of faith to do, yes to obey, the will of God! When we obey God’s will by faith we will experience victory over the world!

It comes back to the question of whether you are walking by sight or by faith?  Faith believes God is right!

Verse for May 4 (5/4) is 1 John 5:4.  It says, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

    Continue Strong walking by FAITH!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on May 3 (5/3) is Psalm 5:3

Verse to DATE the Word on May 3 (5/3) is Psalm 5:3

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning
I will direct it to You, And I will look up.”  – Psalms 5:3
A DAILY DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE ON GOD

Psalm 5:3 is a declaration of dependence on God as David states emphatically that God will be hearing his voice as he awakens in the morning. He will not be saying “Good Lord, it is morning” but rather “Good morning, Lord.”  This declaration of dependence on God continues with David stating he will be looking up to God because he knows his help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth (Psalm 121:2)

I look at Psalm 5:3 as a great way guide to start each day!!!  My guide for first thing in the morning goes like this:
First thing in the morning I give worship to God.
Then I get wisdom from God.
Then and only then do I go to work for God, looking to be a witness for the Lord.

I Give Worship! (God hears my voice)
I Get Wisdom!  (My ears are open to God to hear His voice)
I Go to Work!   (Wherever I go I represent God)

In putting this guide into action, I would like to suggest that you start each day by praying the Lord’s Prayer.  This allows you to give adoration and praise to Him or WORSHIP!  It allows you to acknowledge His place of authority in your life.  It allows you to ask Him for the provisions you need and the protection you need.  It closes with another round of praise to Him.
Then you want to READ a portion of God’s Word, which is where you get WISDOM.  Offering worship to God you have spoken to God.  Now you need to allow God to speak to you!   As far as what to read I leave that to you. There are so many PLANS.  You can read one chapter a day out of the NT, reading Monday through Friday (5 days a week) and you will read through the entire NT in a year.   I suggest for a month like May which has 31 days that you read one chapter a day from Proverbs.  In the month coming up, I would suggest you read 5 chapters a day from Psalms as it has 150 chapters.  The most important here is that you READ some of God’s Word every day.

Then after giving worship to God and getting wisdom from God go to work for God with a mindset of being a witness for the Lord wherever you find yourself throughout the day. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:16)

Our verse to DATE on May 3 (5/3) is Psalm 5:3. It says, “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.”

Have you declared your dependence on God for this day?

  • Verse to DATE the Word on May 2 (5/2) is Ephesians 5:2

Verse to DATE the Word on May 2 (5/2) is Ephesians 5:2

“And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering
    and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” – Ephesians 5:2
To Be Like Jesus is to Love (and Forgive) like Jesus.

Ephesians 5 starts with “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.” Interestingly, this verse follows Ephesians 4:32 which says, “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.”  Then following “be imitators of God,” comes our verse to DATE that says, “walk in love as Christ has loved us.”  You can see now why I have as my title To Be Like Jesus is to Love (and Forgive) like Jesus.

You may have heard that when looking at the characteristics that best describe Christians that two of the highest descriptions are GIVERS and FORGIVERS.  I like that description as it matches how Christ lived.  He was a GIVER as our verse tells us.  He loved us so much that He GAVE HIMSELF as an offering and a sacrifice.  He gave His life, dying on a cruel cross, for all humanity.

He gave and He FORGAVE.  Today, as a believer your sins have been forgiven.  As a reminder of this as well as how it happened notice:
1 John 2:12  I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for His name’s sake.
Colossian 2:13  And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Ephesians 1:7  In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace,

The forgiveness came because He died and He died because He loved us – He loved you.

Now let us be very honest with ourselves and acknowledge it is easy to read about loving and forgiving like Jesus, but the reality is this may be the hardest actions (or shall I say REACTIONS) we take.  People are HARD TO LOVE.  Saints still sin and sometimes they sin against you. How are you going to RESPOND when a fellow saint sins against you?   I will let you ponder on that.

As a reminder about loving people, I place before you the statement that the time a person needs love the most is when they deserve it the least.  I also remind you that LOVE does not keep a record of wrongs. (1 Cor. 13:5d NIV)

I also remind you that “forgiveness is the glue that holds all relationships together.”   And the standard for extending forgiveness is to forgive as Jesus forgave.

Question: Was there any sin of yours that He did not forgive?  (You know the answer is none.)
Question: If He forgave any and all types of your sins, what sin(s) against you do you not have to forgive? (Told you this is hard)

If we are to live and act like Jesus, then we are going to be extending forgiveness.  And our forgiveness will be extended because we are loving like Jesus.

Verse to DATE the Word on May 2 (5/2) is Ephesians 5:2. It says, “And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.”

Show them Jesus by loving and forgiving them!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on May 1 (5/1) is Deuteronomy 5:1

Verse to DATE the Word on May 1 (5/1) is Deuteronomy 5:1

“Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear(LISTEN) O Israel, the statutes and
judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be
careful to observe them (LIVE them).” – Deuteronomy 5:1
LISTEN, LEARN, and LIVE the WORD!

What are we to do with God’s Word?  Moses gives THREE essential things to do with God’s Word here in Deuteronomy 5:1.
First, we are to LISTEN (HEAR, O Israel).
Second, we are to LEARN (that you might LEARN).
Third, we are to LIVE (careful to OBSERVE them).

We are to LISTEN to God’s Word! To listen is to become ATTENTIVE to what is being said.  We can be hearing, but not listening because we were not paying attention.  You can be “hearing” a sermon but not LISTENING to the sermon.  One of the great heartaches of God is found in Proverbs 1:24 as He says, “I have called and you refused to listen.”  Are you putting yourself in a place to LISTEN to God’s Word?  Are you paying close attention to what is being said?
ARE YOU LISTENING that you need to be LISTENING?

We are to LEARN God’s Word!  To learn is to comprehend information so that it can be applied.   It is gaining an understanding.  It is gaining knowledge.  To learn one will need to do the hard work of studying.  While there is the component of being able to remember there is also the component of knowing how the information is used.  In learning God’s Word, we don’t just want to be memorizing it.  While it is important to hide God’s Word in your heart so you can recall it the full idea is learning is we now have a skill.  Studying is to make one skillful.  Studying God’s Word is to make one skillful in how to use God’s Word. Are you taking the time to LEARN God’s Word?

We are to be LIVING God’s Word.  We are to be more than listeners and learners.  We are to be living out the skills we now possess.   There is an APPLICATION of the skills learned to daily living. As Pastor James says in his letter, we are to be DOERS.  Only a fool would be listening and learning but not living what they have learned.  (Matt. 7:26) Are you LIVING out what you are LEARNING?

Our verse to DATE on May 1 (5/1) is from Deuteronomy 5:1 It says, “Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which God speaks in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe (live) them.”

LISTEN to the Word! LEARN the Word! LIVE the Word!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on April 30 (4/30) is Ephesians 4:30

Verse to DATE the Word on April 30 (4/30) is Ephesians 4:30

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.” – Ephesians 4:30
Don’t GRIEVE HOLY SPIRIT, THE HELPER

As we make decisions about doing what is right or wrong, we have a HELPER.  When we become believers, we get a new resident in our lives as the Holy Spirit indwells us.  Jesus told His disciples as He was preparing to leave that He would send them the Helper.  In the Book of John, we have several verses that talk about the Helper or the Holy Spirit and what His role would be.
John 14:16  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
John 14:26  But the Helper, (the Holy Spirit), whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 15:26  “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about me.
John 16:13  When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.

With the Holy Spirit, the HELPER, living within us we have one who speaks truth to us and guides us to practice the truth, to do what is right.

The Apostle Paul teaches that the Holy Spirit will give us the power to resist any temptation.  He writes in Galatians 5:16 for us to “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

As we come to Ephesians 4:30, we learn that we can GRIEVE the Holy Spirit, the HELPER.  To “grieve” is to make sad or sorrowful, to bring about a heaviness.  Having read what the Holy Spirit, the HELPER does for us I would think we can understand how He is grieved when we sin.  In His role, He has helped us to know the truth of what is right and what is wrong.  In His role, He helps us to resist the temptations to do wrong.  When we do what is wrong the Helper has to feel rejection as we reject the truth, and we reject the help.

I see Ephesians 4:30 as a verse that serves as a filter for decision-making.  I want the actions I take, even the attitudes I display, to be pleasing to God.  I don’t want to disappoint Him, and I surely don’t want to GRIEVE the Holy Spirit.

Now it is worth noting the promise that comes in this verse.  While we can and do at times grieve and even quench the work of the Holy Spirit, we stay SEALED by Him for the day of redemption.

As you make decisions how much weight does the Holy Spirit and His “feelings” have before displaying an attitude or taking an action?

Verse to DATE on April 30 (4/30) is Ephesians 4:30. It says, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

Bring pleasure, not pain to the Helper!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on April 29 (4/29) is Ephesians 4:29

Verse to DATE the Word on April 29 (4/29) is Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary
edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” – Ephesians 4:29
If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything!

As the Apostle Paul writes to the Ephesians in Ephesians 4, he will be instructing believers that there is to be a difference in how one lives. From verse 1 the believer is “to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called!” From verse 17 the believer no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind.” In verse 22 the believer is to “put off the former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,” In verse 24 the believer is “to put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” Clearly, the believer lives differently.

One may ask then HOW DOES ONE LIVE DIFFERENTLY?  There are several answers in Ephesians 4.
Ephesians 4:25 tells us to stop LYING.
Ephesians 4:26 we are to stop losing our TEMPER.
Ephesians 4:28 we are to stop STEALING and go to work, so we can earn an income to live and GIVE.

From Ephesians 4:29 we live differently when it comes to our WORDS, to our conversation. A life changed by Christ means our communication changes. Instead of corrupt, rotten, unwholesome, filthy communication coming out of our mouths that harms others, we have clean, wholesome, edifying language that helps people.  Our words convey respect for and the dignity of people.  Instead of using words to tear people down, the believer carefully chooses words to BUILD OTHERS UP!

BTW – Jesus takes very seriously what we say about others.  From Matthew 5:21-22 He said, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22  But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

Are you careless with your words as you speak to and about others?
Do you call people names that are not fitting?  Does your word devalue another person?
Are you cruel with your words as you speak to and about others?

Let us remember that our WORDS in so many ways reveal our heart.  It goes to reason that a clean heart will bring forth clean words and a dirty heart brings forth dirty words.

What are your WORDS saying to others ABOUT your HEART?

What are your WORDS doing for the LISTENER?  Are they built up by your words or torn down by your words?  Are they harmed or helped?

Verse to DATE on April 29 (4/29) is Ephesians 4:29. It says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

If you don’t have anything good to say, then don’t say anything!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on April 28 (4/28) is Ephesians 4:28

Verse to DATE the Word on April 28 (4/28) is Ephesians 4:28

“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” – Ephesians 4:28
    Living Radically Different

Becoming a Christian and living the Christian life is about living DIFFERENTLY.  Ephesians speaks of our past life being radically changed by Christ as we go from being dead to being alive. It then speaks of our present life where we are living radically differently. I use the word “radically” because of verses like Ephesians 4:28. In this verse we start with a person who is a thief and is TAKING from others and we end with a GIVER who is generous and helping others.  In this one verse, we see a radically changed person.  One might even say this person is TRANSFORMED!

Going into the verse a little deeper the Apostle Paul is teaching in Ephesians 4 about how a Christian does live.  As a new person in Christ, one does not steal.  Reading that should bring to your mind the 8th Commandment of the Ten Commandments.  It says, “You shall not steal.” Stated in the negative we look at it from the positive.  A person is to value and respect the possessions of others!!

Paul’s instructions to the believer is to have a noticeable, if you will, radical change. The one who has been stealing is no longer stealing but working.  The one stealing from others is now to earn a living by industry and integrity. (working with your hands what is GOOD.) They are not to be a TAKER but a WORKER!

BTW – This is not the only time the Apostle Paul addressed the subject of WORK.  Notice:
1 Thessalonians 4:11  and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,
2 Thessalonians 3:10  For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.
2 Thessalonians 3:12  Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

Now Paul instructs the new person in Christ to really think and live differently.  He not only tells the thief to stop TAKING he instructs them to change from harming others but to be helpful to others.   While earning a living and providing for oneself and for one’s family the new person is earning to have something to GIVE to someone in need! The one who was a TAKER before Christ is now a GIVER!!!!

For me, two things stand out from Ephesians 4:28.
This verse reminds us of how Christ does radically change a person’s life.  If you are in Christ you should have a testimony of a CHANGED and a CHANGING life.

Secondly, if you are stealing, being a TAKER, you are to STOP and go find a job.  Then as you work to earn a living and be a provider you are not to be a KEEPER but a GIVER. You are instructed from this verse to be working so you can help others.

Verse to DATE the Word on April 28 (4/28) is Ephesians 4:28. It says, “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.”

“Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.”   – Proverbs 4:27
    TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION NOW

Throughout the month of April, we have highlighted a number of verses from Proverb 4 as this is one of the most instructive chapters in the Bible on taking actions that bring life and prevent death.  It opens with an appeal to hear and be fully attentive to the instruction as the teaching is GOOD.  Proverbs 4:1-2 says “Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, 2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.”  Then comes the strongest advice to acquire wisdom as wisdom is the principal thing.  To live life the way God intended it to be lived one needs to get HIS INSIGHTS and INSTRUCTIONS.  These insights and instructions are called WISDOM!

As we move toward the end of the chapter, we learn how to stay spiritually healthy.  Proverbs 4:23 may be one of the most important verses we must learn and apply as we are told to GUARD our hearts with ALL DILIGENCE for out of it comes the very issues of life.  To guard our hearts calls for putting the right things in and keeping the wrong things out.

To be spiritually healthy we must be putting the WORD of God in our hearts.

To be spiritually healthy we must be watching our words, keeping our conversation clean, and telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

To be spiritually healthy we must be watching what we watch.  Just as we set a guard on our mouth, we set a guard on our eyes.  We make the commitment to set nothing wicked before our eyes.  (See Psalms 101:3)

To be spiritually healthy we must be watching where we walk.  If we are to have the right practices we will need to be at the right places.  Too often we yield to temptation because we are at the wrong places.   Proverbs 4:26 tells us to PONDER OUR PATH so that we don’t put ourselves in places where we are prone to fall.

The chapter concludes with REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM EVIL. We have here the call to take personal responsibility for all of our actions.  Based on the previous instructions the reader is now informed on what is RIGHT.  Now is the time to own your decisions.  Removing your foot from evil means to STOP DOING IT.  It means to CUT IT OUT!  It means to QUIT IT.

This closing call to take personal responsibility for yourself leaves no room for excuses.  Proverbs 4 has told of the damage that evil brings, and you have been told to AVOID the highway to hell.  Proverbs 4 has told of the benefits of walking on the path of righteousness.

The question now is how do you RESPOND?   What ACTIONS do you need to take NOW?

Verse to DATE the Word on April 27 (4/27) is Proverbs 4:27.  It says, “Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.”
