  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 14 (6/14) is Galatians 6:14

“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” – Galatians 6:14
    Keep First Things FIRST

In keeping first things firsts and the main thing the main thing, the Apostle Paul reminds us that our focus is Jesus Christ and the work He did at the cross. We are to focus on the message of the cross because it is the only message that doubly changes lives!  It changes a person’s eternal destination, and it changes a person’s earthly desires.  No other message can do that. No wonder the Apostle Paul said he would only boast in the cross of Christ!

When the gospel is accepted it changes a person’s eternal destination, and it changes a person’s earthly desires.

To go along with Galatians 6:14 the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians that he had “determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”  (1 Corinthians 2:2)  Earlier he had written, “But we preach Christ crucified, .. (1 Cor. 1:23)  As he moves toward a conclusion with the Corinthians he writes,  Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2  by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain. 3  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,  4  and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,”

When the gospel is accepted it changes a person’s eternal destination, and it changes a person’s earthly desires.

Note: Just a reminder that as we desire to see other people live and think differently it begins with regeneration and justification and adoption into the family of God. In other words, change happens when one gets saved!  One only changes when one accepts the gospel.  For that to happen there needs to be evangelization.  For us to see our neighbors, friends, relatives, and associates, as well as our neighborhoods, cities, country, and yes world changed, they need to hear the message of the CROSS – the GOSPEL!    Evangelization, sharing the GOSPEL – introducing people to Jesus – is the start.  Are you sharing the gospel?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 14 (6/14) is Galatians 6:14.  It says, “But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

As you boast let your boast be about JESUS and knowing Him and making Him known!
“But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice, and righteousness on the earth–for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD”  (Jeremiah 9:24)

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 13 (6/13) is Ephesians 6:13

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:13
    Dressing for Spiritual Success

As believers, we should know there is spiritual warfare going on around us all the time, and many times we are the prime target of the evil one.  As Paul wraps up his letter to the Ephesians, he tells them (Eph. 6:10-12) to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Let us make no mistake here about the battle and the enemy we face.  We have a ferocious ENEMY seeking to devour us (cf. I Peter 5:8).  Yet we must know that God has supplied the believer with various pieces of EQUIPMENT called the Armor of God to handle whatever the enemy may bring.   Thus, it is vitally important to be EDUCATED about what each piece of the armor of God is and know what each one does. (**Can you name them and give a short description?)

Getting properly educated on each piece EQUIPS us for encounters with the ENEMY.

    Practically, to withstand the onslaught of the enemy and STAND, the believer needs to start each new day dressing for spiritual warfare, yes, dressing for spiritual success.  As you start your day visualize the different pieces of the armor of God being put on.  You will have your waist girded with the belt of truth.  You will have your chest covered with the breastplate of righteousness.  You will have on your feet shoes representing the preparation of the gospel of peace.  Eph. 6:16 says, above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God;

Getting personal:  Do you recognize the reality of daily spiritual warfare in your personal life?  Do you know how much the enemy wants to steal from you, destroy you, and devour you?

Are you equipping yourself with God’s supernatural equipment for encounters with the enemy?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 13 (6/13) is Ephesians 6:13. It says, “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Don’t give your enemy the edge by failing to properly prepare for his attacks.  Get equipped with God’s equipment and educated on each piece of the equipment to handle any encounter with your enemy.

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 12 (6/12) is Judges 6:12

“And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him (Gideon), and said to him,
The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” – Judges 6:12
    God’s Greatest and Best Promise

The story of Gideon is a very compelling story to consider as God will take the ordinary and do extraordinary things with him. If we really probe into the early life of Gideon, we might even say that God took a person who was less than ordinary and did the extraordinary.  We know that Gideon himself did not think he had what it took to be used by God and we know that family and friends did not see much in him.  But GOD did see something in Gideon, seeing more than Gideon saw in himself and more than others saw in him.  While Gideon, nor friends, or family, would have picked Gideon for a top assignment, God picked him. And God used him, using him to a level in which Gideon lived up to the name God gave him, a mighty man of valor!

Maybe you are like Gideon as you look at yourself and as you evaluate yourself, comparing yourself to others and you don’t see how you can truly make a difference for the Lord.  Maybe you hear the voices in the back of your head of statements made by others that cause you to believe YOU WILL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING.  And then it seems out of nowhere God comes in and calls you to do what seems impossible.  What will you do with His call?  Do you listen to yourself?  Do you listen to others?  Or do you LISTEN TO GOD and what He is saying?

Over the years of my ministry, I have had to opportunity to work with so many who immediately said “I can’t” to God’s calling.  As I hear their “I can’t” I point them to the story of Gideon and give them Judges 6:12. In this verse two life-changing statements are made to Gideon.  It is in this verse that God defines Gideon.  Gideon is in the sight of God a mighty man of valor.

God has always seen more in a person than the person sees in themselves!

It is in this verse that God gives Gideon the greatest and best promise Gideon would need as He tells Gideon “I am with you.”  God promised Gideon His presence.

When we speak of God’s promises, I believe that the greatest and best promise ever is the PROMISE OF HIS PRESENCE!

Pause to ponder how those two statements impacted Gideon.
Ponder hearing “THE LORD IS WITH YOU!”  What do you think that meant to Gideon?
Ponder hearing an evaluation of being called a MIGHTY MAN OF VALOR!  What do you think that meant to Gideon?

How does the statement from God “I am with you” impact your life and what God has called you to do?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 12 (6/12) is Judges 6:12. It says, “And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him (Gideon), and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!”

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 11 (6/11) is 1 Timothy 6:11

“But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.” – 1 Timothy 6:11
RUNNING AWAY FROM THE WRONG THINGS and RUNNING AFTER THE RIGHT THINGS

As we live out our new life in Christ, living as a Christian should live, there are things to RUN AWAY FROM (FLEE these things) and things to RUN AFTER (PURSUE these things).  Unfortunately, we often find ourselves RUNNING AFTER what we should be fleeing or running away from and we RUN FROM what we should be pursuing or running after.  From our verse to consider let us make sure we are RUNNING AWAY FROM THE WRONG THINGS and RUNNING AFTER THE RIGHT THINGS.

Here is 1 Timothy 6:11 the Apostle Paul tells Timothy to “FLEE these things.” A great way to understand the word “FLEE” is to think of being a FUGITIVE.  “These things” that he is to be fleeing are greed and the love of money (See v 10).

Rather than living to GET ALL ONE CAN GET, the believer is to be PURSUING becoming ALL THEY CAN BE.

The Apostle Paul liked to call believers to live out key character traits. (See the bonus section) He wants to see the believer living RIGHTEOUSLY or living right. Can someone say you are RIGHTEOUS in your actions and activities? He wants the believer to be GODLY. Are you a godly person? He wants the believer to be living by FAITH.  Do you walk by sight or walk by faith? Is your daily trust in God evident to others? He wants the believer to be a person who LOVES, loving others. Do you love others?  He wants the believer to be a person of PATIENCE or ENDURANCE. In other words, you stay in the game no matter how hard it is.  There is no quit in you.  And he wants the believer to be a person of GENTLENESS or meekness. This means you handle people with care.  These are the things to be RUNNING AFTER!

This list of things to pursue is not new for Paul or for Timothy.  Earlier in this first letter to Timothy Paul wrote for him to be an example. I Timothy 4:12 says, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”  For Timothy to be the example he will need to determine what he will run away from and what he will run after.

What are you running away from? What are you seeking to avoid?  What are you staying clear of?

What are you running after? What are you pursuing?

The answer to these two questions in so many ways will determine your future destiny. Choose wisely!!

Verse to DATE the Word on June 11 (6/11) is 1 Timothy 6:11.  It says, “But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.”

    Bonus
Here are a few other LISTS to consider regarding what to RUN AWAY FROM and to RUN AFTER
2 Timothy 2:22  Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2 Timothy 3:10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11  persecutions, afflictions,

Galatians 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentlenesses, self-control. Against such, there is no law.

2 Peter 1:5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6  to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7  to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8  For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 10 (6/10) is 1 Timothy 6:10

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have
strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves
through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
In GOD, not gold, we Love and Trust

Knowing that the human heart is tempted to be greedy and so greedy to the level one will be in love with money, the Apostle Paul here in 1 Timothy 6 addresses the topic of money and in 1 Timothy 6:10 issues one of the strongest warnings regarding the LOVE OF MONEY. He tells us that the love of money creates (is the root of) the start of all kinds of evil as one is prone to compromise one’s integrity for gain.  He tells just how DANGEROUS this DESIRE of money is as one will even compromise one’s FAITH as greediness takes such a stronghold on a person.  Work takes priority over worship.

The greediness for gold slowly but surely will bring about the exclusion of God.

The mission of making money can cause one to miss the mission of the Master.

The apostle then tells how it gets even worse as the priority for profit brings untold pain.  The pain starts coming as one finds they are NEVER SATISFIED. There is no THIS IS ENOUGH.   The priority to pursue more money pushes aside the pursuit of godliness.  One’s health can be compromised as one goes for more wealth.  Family and friendships take a back seat to the next acquisition.

While gaining valuables one can lose what is most valuable.

Let us be clear that money itself is not evil – but the LOVE of money can turn one to doing sinful practices. As you MAKE money from working, from investments, from inheritances received you are to MANAGE your money faithfully, correctly, and wisely.  Above managing your money though is MASTERING money.  You are to be the MASTER of your money and not the other way around.  Think of it like fire. A fire in a fire pit or a fireplace is nice.  It is even needed on cold days. But a fire outside its boundaries can be so disastrous, even deadly.  Money mishandled and unmastered is disastrous!

If you need a little help (maybe a lot of help) in breaking the grip of money I suggest two things:
1st, be clearly reminded of Jesus’ teaching on money from Luke 12:15 as Jesus said, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses?”
**How are you doing with this teaching?  It definitely challenges conventional and popular thinking!

2nd, look at your money.  It has a sermon on it. It says IN GOD WE TRUST.   It does not say IN THIS god WE TRUST!!!

Verse for the date of June 10 (6/10) is I Timothy 6:10. It says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 9 (6/9) is Galatians 6:9

“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall
reap if we do not lose heart.” – Galatians 6:9
    ENCOURAGEMENT FOR DISCOURAGEMENT

Galatians 6:9 is one of the top ENCOURAGEMENT verses in the Bible.  It addresses the real issue of growing weary (DISCOURAGED) while doing good.  Do you ever get weary? Tired?  WORN PLUMB OUT?  Exhausted?  Drained? I am sure you do!! I know I do.  And because we do become weary in doing good, we need the Apostle Paul’s encouragement to not quit!!

Ponder for a second the phrase “While doing GOOD!”  Here you are doing good for God, and it is tiring – difficult – discouraging – draining (google synonyms for weary).  You become exhausted, worn out, spent, dog-tired, and/or sapped. Shall I go on? One would think that doing GOOD for God would always be refreshing and rewarding yet, at times, it is so hard we wonder if we should continue.  Have you been there?  Maybe you are there now.

Now I want to quickly point out that this verse is for all Christians, not just those who we may identify as in full-time service to the Lord.  As each of us seeks to DO GOOD and be a blessing to others we can quickly and unfortunately begin to lose heart. We hate to admit it but being a blessing sometimes brings a burden.  You may be seeking to help a hurting person and end up getting hurt.  Whether it is preparing a Bible study lesson or preparing a meal for a grieving family doing good is draining.  As we give of ourselves we find that we want to give up.

Yet Galatian 6:9 tells us to not lose heart.  As one does good one needs to have an eye to a future time where there is a harvest.  The hard work will pay off.  Like planting a crop and doing the hard work of nurturing it and cultivating it there will be a time when the plant will produce!  The challenge is being patient for the plant to produce!  Paul says don’t lose hope! Don’t give up! DON’T QUIT!!!!!

May I add that there is a prayer for the tired, weary heart/hands.  It is found in another 6/9.  I speak of Nehemiah 6:9. As Nehemiah faced obstacles and opposition to the GOOD he was doing for God he prayed, “O God, strengthen my hands.”  As you become weary in the work call on God to STRENGTHEN your hands!

Verse to DATE the Word on June 9 (6/9) is Galatians 6:9. It says, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

Today I pray for you that God would strengthen your weary heart and hands!  I pray that you will be intentional to recharge.  May you find a chair to sit in and read God’s Word and be refreshed to keep doing good.  May you cast your cares upon Him as He does care for you!  Cry out to Him for His sustaining strength!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 8 (6/8) is Isaiah 6:8

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” – Isaiah 6:8
    HERE AM I! SEND ME!

As one reads Isaiah 6 one can conclude that the prophet Isaiah had one of the greatest moments any human being could ever experience.  The chapter opens with the difficult detail that King Uzziah has died. He had been the king of Judah for 52 years. He was very popular as he made numerous improvements for Judah.  With his death would come many unknowns.  It is in this challenging moment that Isaiah SEES THE LORD and we are enriched to read of what he sees as he sees Him high and lifted up and the train of His robe filled the temple.  Isaiah then tells of what he HEARS as seraphims are crying HOLY HOLY HOLY.  This brings about brokenness over his sin that brings about confession to the Lord and then cleansing from the Lord!  What a moment!  What a beautiful moment!!! And it is not over.

From SEEING the Lord, and HEARING about the Lord, humbly confessing his sins, Isaiah now HEARS the Lord speaking. He is able to hear the Lord’s heart.  He is able to hear what the Lord needs.  He is able to hear the Lord’s inner circle conversation, hearing the request of WHOM SHALL I SEND and WHO WILL GO FOR US?  What a moment this was!

As Isaiah hears the voice of God, he responds with one of the greatest responses one can make to God as he says, “HERE AM I! SEND ME!”

“HERE I AM! SEND ME!”   Isaiah

May I ask you a very personal question?  Have those 5 words ever crossed your lips to the ears of God? Have you made yourself available to God for God to be used by God?  Have you said to God that you are available for whatever He wants, for Him to use you however He wants, wherever He wants, and whenever He wants?  Has there been a time of total surrender of your life and you said, “HERE I AM! SEND ME.

To be a little more personal with my questioning are you LISTENING to hear what God is saying?  Are you so busy with your life that you have no time to hear the requests of God?  It is, after all, hard to hear when we are not listening.  I trust you are not missing what God is saying, but in this world, with so much noise it may be you are not being still to hear the small still voice of God.

BTW – While we would say dependability is the greatest ability, availability is the first ability!

Verse to DATE the Word on June 8 (6/8) is Isaiah 6:8. It says, “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 7 (6/7) is Galatians 6:7

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows,
that he will also reap.” – Galatians 6:7
There is the LAW OF SOWING AND REAPING!

I am not sure how you just read Galatians 6:7 but I would hope that the opening words GRABBED YOUR ATTENTION. I see Galatian 6:7 as one of those IN YOUR FACE verses and the opening words of “Do not be deceived” are written to get your full attention as something life-changing is getting ready to be revealed.   Are you AWAKE?  Are you paying attention?  The fact that you are being challenged to NOT BE DECEIVED should be telling you that you are entering a battle for your mind as Satan is ready to whisper that you are not going to be hearing the truth.

Does God have your attention?  Just in case He does not Paul gives ANOTHER in your face statement with GOD IS NOT MOCKED.  Now with two in your face statements “Do not be deceived,” and “God is not mocked,” to grab your attention the Apostle Paul gives what I consider to be one of the most important life principles a person can learn as he states, “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

“Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap!!!”

Friends, you better learn the laws of sowing and reaping. ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!!  Don’t be deceived! Choices have consequences. God is not mocked!  Just as one would plant seeds and after a time receive a harvest the actions you take bring forth a harvest.  If you sow good actions, there will be good and positive consequences but if you sow bad actions tough and hard consequences will soon come your way.

You are what you sow!  Not sure who wrote this but you should learn it:
    Sow a thought – reap an action;
Sow an action – reap a habit:
    Sow a habit – reap a character
    Sow a character – reap a destiny.
A mark of maturity is when a person realizes the truth of Galatians 6:7 that whatsoever you sow you also will reap!

Bonus – laws of sowing and reaping include:
    You reap ONLY after you sow;
    WHATEVER you sow that will you also REAP;
AND you will also reap MORE than you sow!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 6 (6/6) is Proverbs 6:6

“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise,” – Proverbs 6:6
Learning DILIGENCE, (to be hard at work) from an ANT!

One cannot read through the book of Proverbs without noticing that King Solomon has a major problem with those who are LAZY.  There are close to 20 verses to address the lazy, the sluggard, the idle, and the slothful. To the ones who are lazy and sluggards, he will be very direct and challenge them to change their behavior!  There will be no compliments for being lazy!   On the other hand, there are those who work hard and are diligent.  They are responsible with responsibilities and as he writes of them, he commends and compliments them.  He will commend them as being wise!  He will commend them by saying diligence is a man’s precious possession.

While Solomon conveys his displeasure with the lazy and the sluggard, he also looks for ways to teach a strong work ethic to those who are lazy and slothful, to the one who is a SLUGGARD.  And of all the places and of all the animals to use to teach the sluggard, he sees the work ethic of the ANTS.  Picture him seeing ants in his yard or in a field.  He sees those ANTS working!  They do not have an overseer, yet they are diligently working to gather into their storehouse food for future use.  As he is watching them work, he calls on the sluggard, the lazy, to look at them and learn!

Have you considered ants?   Just as Jesus told us to consider the birds so we might not worry, Solomon tells us to consider the ANTS so that we might learn to WORK!   The ANT understands the necessity of preparing for the future.  The ANT understands that there are seasons of opportunities and that those opportunities are to be seized in a timely matter.  The sluggard (what an awful description) will miss opportunities and fail to be ready for the future.   So even while it may be embarrassing Solomon says CONSIDER the little ant so one can WISE UP, GET UP, and GET TO WORKING!!

As you dive into your responsibilities today what is the ANT teaching you?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 6 (6/6) is Proverbs 6:6. It says, “Go to the ant, you sluggardConsider her ways and be wise,”

Continue Strong with a strong work ethic,
And remember to DATE the Word

    BTW – Solomon gained much wisdom from taking the time to observe a variety of animals.   When looking to convey life lessons of the highest order he went to four animals that most likely would not make our top list when thinking about lessons to learn from animals.  However, he saw four small, little animals and called them exceedingly wise.  Do you recall?  Proverbs 30:24 There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise: 25  The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer;
26 The rock badgers are a feeble folk, Yet they make their homes in the crags; 27  The locusts have no king, Yet they all advance in ranks; 28  The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces.”

Why are these four animals so wise, so exceedingly wise?  The ants value preparation.  The rock badgers value protection.  The locusts value cooperation.  The spider values imagination.

“Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.” – Isaiah 6:5
Isaiah 6 is one of the great chapters of the Bible.  In this chapter, Isaiah sees the Lord who is high a lifted up and he hears that He is HOLY.  As a matter of fact, the angels cry out HOLY! HOLY! HOLY!  As Isaiah sees God and understands who God is, Isaiah now SEES himself and hears what has been proceeding out of his mouth.  Seeing and understanding God for who He is causes Isaiah to see and understand who he is. What he sees is not pretty.  The holiness of God has revealed just how unholy and unclean he is.

Principle: the closer you get to God the more evident your sins will become!

As Isaiah is overcome with how unclean he is he confesses to God that he is condemned and completely undone!  He knows his lips are unclean and that he is around people who have unclean lips and there is nothing he himself can do.  Seeing God for who He is has brought Isaiah to confess just how unclean he is!

With Isaiah’s realization of sin and confession of sin, God will now forgive and cleanse Isaiah. Verses 6 and 7 says, “Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7  And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.”

When we read Isaiah 6:6-7 we can’t help but think of 1 John 1:9. It says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

At this point, a few questions need to be asked.  Are you putting yourself in places where you can see the Lord for who He is so that you might truly understand who you are?   Are you in His Word so that the Word can be like a mirror to you and reveal things that need to be confessed?  Are you hearing the Word of God proclaimed so that you might know what God’s standards are?

The big question: are you acknowledging that you are undone and unclean and confessing your sins to God so that you might be clean?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 5 (6/5) is Isaiah 6:5. It says, “So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.”

Earlier I stated a principle that “the closer you get to God the more evident your sins will become!”   Have you found this to be true?
