  • Verse to DATE the Word on July 3 (7/3) is 1 Samuel 7:3

“Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the LORD
with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from
among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and
He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” – 1 Samuel 7:3
An excellent guide to personal revival!

Over my many years on my spiritual journey, I have heard many messages on the need for revival.  As I read the Bible I have found several passages that speak of personal revival.  1 Samuel 7:3 is one of my top go-to verses for learning the actions needed for personal revival.

As you consider 1 Samuel 7:3 and personal revival please allow me to present a few thoughts. Personal revival is where one revives, bringing back to life,  personal obedience to the Lord! Revival is needed as one has put something or some things in place of God.  A person’s first love, their love for God has been replaced with another love.  Revival happens as one REALIZES they are wrong and they REPENT.  Repentance is making a 180 turn. One RETURNS to their first love.  One then takes the step of REMOVING the things that displaced their first love.  For there to be real revival I believe there is one more step and the step is to RESOLVE.  To resolve is to make a firm RESOLUTION.  The resolution includes a RECOMMITMENT  that says one will ONLY LOVE and SERVE GOD.  When this happens one can expect God to do incredible things through the person and for the person!

Are you serving ONLY HIM?  Have you given yourself to an idol or some idols that have drawn you away from your first love?  Do you need to have a personal revival?

Tip – occasionally you need to draw a circle around yourself and say, “Lord, start a revival inside this circle.”  That prayer will certainly bring about conviction and God will reveal things that need to be removed.  Put into action the steps outlined above.  Rededicate yourself to serving ONLY HIM!

Verse to DATE the Word on July 3 (7/3 ) is 1 Samuel 7:3. It says, “Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths from among you, and prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”

Getting really personal: When is the last time you inserted yourself into Joshua 24:15 and said “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD?”

Continue Strong committed only to serving and loving Jesus.

  • Verse to DATE the Word on July 2 (7/2) is Ecclesiastes 7:2

Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting,
for that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart.” – Ecclesiastes 7:2
    A Very Sobering Thought

There is no doubt in my mind that if given a choice you would rather go to a house of feasting than the funeral home! There is pleasure to be had in the house of feasting whereas there is pain and heartache at the funeral home. Yet Ecclesiastes 7:2 tells us the better choice is to go to the funeral home. For Solomon, the house of mourning, the funeral home, is incredibly VALUABLE as it is like a school room where wisdom can be gained. In the house of feasting, one may find leisure and laughter but very seldom any lessons.  In the house of mourning, life lessons are learned that impact one’s heart,

The funeral home is like a school room as it provides life lessons for the living to learn.

What might be learned at the funeral home?  Facing the fact that a person has DIED has the ability to AWAKENED the LIVING to LIVE LIFE FULLY.  One is reminded in this place of mourning that life comes with a deadline, usually an unexpected deadline.  One is reminded of the brevity of life, no matter how many years the person lived. And in the place of mourning, one should be reminded of a future judgment. In the funeral home, we learn that this life is not all there is.  These are but a few lessons one might learn at the house of mourning.

My hope today is the Scripture WAKES you up to LIVING 1000% for the Lord! I hope you don’t have to go to a funeral to understand – to learn – that this earthly life will come to an end – and it usually is an unexpected end. From considering Ecclesiastes 7:2, you should grab onto Ecclesiastes 9:10 and do “Whatever your hand finds to do, DO IT with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”

On a personal note – I really was not familiar with Ecclesiastes 7:2 in 1989 but what it teaches is very real.  In May of 1989, my mother would die unexpectedly, dying of a massive heart attack. The day after her death her obituary was in the Lynchburg paper.  It started with her name and then the number 56.  She was only 56.  As I looked at that number I thought about another number.  The number was 28. Why 28?  Because I was 28.  As I looked at the number 56, I realized that if I were to live as long (or as short) as my mom lived I would have already lived half my life.  It became a motivation to get VERY serious about living every moment for the Lord.  The funeral home became a schoolroom that week.

Verse to DATE the Word on July 2 (7/2) is Ecclesiastes 7:2. Ecclesiastes 7:2 says, “Better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart.”

You might take a moment to consider what you have learned from being at a funeral.   What messages have come to you from the house of mourning that has motivated you to live differently?

Continue Strong LIVING for the Lord till you die,

  • Verse to DATE the Word on July 1 (7/1) is Proverbs 7:1

“My son, keep my words, and treasure up my commands within you.” – Proverbs 7:1
    Responding to the Word

As part of imparting wisdom, Solomon will frequently appeal to his son, to the reader, to receive and respond with proactive actions to his teaching.  In Proverbs 7:1 he appeals to his son to (1) keep his word.  The idea of the word “keep” is to obey.  It has the idea of putting it into action. While it is great to acquire wisdom one must also APPLY the wisdom.  We must be more than hearers (readers) of God’s Word, we must be doers!

While appealing for ACTION with his words there also is an appeal (2) to have a positive attitude toward the commands.  He calls on him to place a high value on the commands by TREASURING the commands.  As one thinks of treasuring there is the idea of holding it close, of protecting it.  Treasuring also conveys cherishing.  We see tremendous VALUE in the Word.  Because we place a HIGH VALUE on the commands, we cherish them, and we STORE up the commands so we can USE them.

How are you responding to the Word? Are you RECEPTIVE to what it says?  Do you KEEP what it says, applying and obeying what is taught?  Do you TREASURE the truth?  Do you view it as that of great VALUE?

Verse to DATE the Word on July 1 (7/1) is Proverbs 7:1. It says, “My son, keep my words, and treasure up my commands within you.”

Let us be known for TREASURING the treasure of God’s treasure chest, His Word!

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 30 (6/30) is Mark 6:30

“Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what
they had done and what they had taught.” – Mark 6:30
Resting is Part of Your Responsibilities

Our verse to date reveals how the apostles returned from the ministry assignment Jesus had given to them a few verses earlier (Mark 6:7-12) and gave Him their ministry report.  One can imagine the excitement as they told Jesus what they had been doing and what they had been teaching.  I liken it to hearing testimonies from a group from our church after they returned from a mission trip.  Regardless of any challenges they may have faced their testimonies are filled with what God did THROUGH them and IN them.  It is a glorious and wonderful time.

As you consider Mark 6:30 I invite you to picture the full scene.  Picture first Jesus with His disciples as they receive their assignment.  Hopefully, you can see the anticipation on their faces as He sends them out to share the good news. Picture them responding with obedience and going out to preach and minister.  Mark 6:12 says, “So they went out and preached that people should repent.13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.”

While we are not sure how much time goes by picture now the return of these busy disciples to the feet of Jesus to give to Him a glorious report.  Can you picture Jesus LISTENING?  Can you see Him SEEING them as they told their stories of being used to impact lives?  One must wonder if Jesus is smiling as they tell of people repenting and people being healed.   I think He was.

While Mark 6:30 does not reveal a response from Jesus, in the next verse (Mark 6:31) we can tell Jesus was very INTERESTED and INVOLVED in hearing what they had been doing as He responds with, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”

The reporting by the disciples of fulfilling their responsibilities brought a reply of recognition from Jesus that they now needed to REST.

Please pause to picture what took place here.  Please!!!  See Jesus sending His disciples out with responsibilities. See them fulfilling their responsibilities. Now see Him listening to their reports!  SEE HIM now sending – INSTRUCTING – His disciples to REST!   In response to hearing the report of fulfilling their responsibilities, Jesus tells them to GET SOME REST!

Personal note:  I read once a story that I could readily personalize.  It goes, “I used to think that since the devil never takes a vacation, neither should I. But then I remember that the devil is not my role model nor my teacher!”

Friends, Jesus is your role model and your teacher.  Jesus fulfilled His responsibilities.  (John 17:4) As He fulfilled His responsibilities Jesus took naps. (Luke 8:23 NLT).  Jesus told His disciple to come apart and rest.  Mark 6:31

So, as you fulfill your responsibilities, I trust you will have the opportunity to share your report of what God did through you and in you.  As well, as you fulfill your responsibilities, there must be times when you come apart and REST OR you will come a part.

How well do you REST?  Do you understand that getting rest is part of your responsibilities?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 30 (6/30) is Mark 6:30. It says, “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.”

Mentoring note:  We must “work” at resting.  Be intentional to relax and rest and restore and replenish.  And you must rest and do those other things as He has more for you to do!!  (See Mark 6:32)

Continue Strong fulfilling your responsibilities which include resting,

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 29 (6/29) is 1 Kings 6:29

“So Solomon decorated all the walls of the inner sanctuary and the main room
with carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.” – 1 Kings 6:29 (NLT)
    Taking the time to DECORATE

As I look at this verse and consider the actions of Solomon I try to envision how he turned a plain wall into something incredibly beautiful.  As a builder of the Temple, it was more than just stone upon stone for him.  He wanted the temple to be beautiful for God Himself is described as beautiful.  Solomon’s father David desired to behold the beauty of the Lord. (Psalm 27:4) Thus, as the builder Solomon was an interior decorator decorating both the outside and the inside of the temple.  And when he finished it was said that “Never before had such beautiful things been seen in Judah.” (1 Chronicles 9:24 NLT)

I am thinking most of us appreciate things that are beautiful.  Now the old statement that beauty is in the eye of the beholder is true.  My father would be best described as “an ol’ farmer.”  He would see a large cornfield and say, “Isn’t that beautiful.”   I personally love sunsets. Watching the sunset over the gulf coast is breathtaking to me.  As well I love a sunrise.  I hope you will pause as you read and consider what you consider to be beautiful.

In considering 1 Kings 6:29 about how Solomon decorated walls to make them beautiful I would like to place two thoughts before you.   One is to consider how God has changed your ugly life as a sinner into something beautiful.  At least that is what he did for me.  I was a mess.  I was covered in filth.  Then Jesus comes into my life and He cleansed me from all unrighteousness with His blood.   My mess has been turned into a message of how Jesus Christ changes lives!

The second thought is that we are to be active as interior decorators with our own lives so that we make the gospel attractive.  Titus 2:10 says, “and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.” (NIV) Our behavior is to make the gospel message ATTRACTIVE.  The Greek word translated here attractive is a word that gives us our English word “cosmetic.”  We, as you know, use cosmetics to make ourselves more attractive.  Just as we use cosmetics to make ourselves more attractive to others, we are to put on actions that make the gospel attractive.

So, how are you decorating God’s temple (your life)?  Do the words of your mouth make the gospel attractive?  Does your temperament make the gospel attractive?  (ouch) I think you got the idea.  Our actions as well as inactions stir up emotions in a lost person to be turned on to the gospel or turned off.

In closing allow me to share a decorating tip.  Just as Solomon decorated the temple wall with flowers you should have your life decorated with fruits.  The lost world should see love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  (Gal. 5:22-23)

Verse to DATE the Word on June 29 (6/29) is 1 Kings 6:29. It says, “So Solomon decorated all the walls of the inner sanctuary and the main room with carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.” (NLT)

Decorate your life so the gospel is attractive.

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 28 (6/28) is Matthew 6:28

So why do you worry about clothingConsider the lilies of the field,
how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;” – Matthew 6:28
Don’t just STOP and SMELL the Roses, LOOK and LEARN FROM THE ROSES!

As Jesus is teaching about trusting God and putting GOD FIRST, He knows there is a very real battle of the urgent vs the important.  He knows there is a battle between focusing on the temporal as opposed to the eternal.  He knows there is a battle between the things of earth and things of heaven.  He knows there is a battle over what one’s priorities will be.  He knows that the essential needs of the physical consume a person, consuming them so much that they neglect their spiritual life.   As He teaches the SERMON ON THE MOUNT (Matt. 6 is part of the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5, 6, and 7) He wants His followers to SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Matthew 6:33 is the MAJOR MESSAGE of the sermon.  To get to the place of SEEKING FIRST GOD Jesus has told them that they can’t serve God and mammon – money.  This creates a natural concern, a conflict, if you will, in their soul. Everyone has physical needs and survival demands getting food and water and clothing.  This means having money and getting money means making it a priority.   Physical survival trumps one’s spiritual’s life.

For His listeners, He knows that asking them to put the spiritual above the physical could be a little much. So as a great teacher, He addresses the issues by telling them to NOT WORRY about the essential necessities of life – going so far as saying, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.” He then gives illustrations as to why they CAN trust God and put Him first instead of worrying about the essentials of life.  He then points the worrier first to the birds (v26) and now He points the worrier to the flowers.  He says looks or consider how the flowers grow, growing because GOD takes care of them

Sounds simplistic, doesn’t it?   LOOK and LEARN from BIRDS.  LOOK and LEARN from FLOWERS.  Yet in these two examples, we have illustrations to remind us that GOD really does CARE about us and that He can be trusted entirely!

Friends, your life is more, far more, than just meeting the necessities of life. You are physical as well as SPIRITUAL and the SPIRITUAL LIFE is so much more valuable!

Yes, the question must be asked.  “Will you be putting Jesus first today or your needs first?”

As you battle what (WHO) will be first you are encouraged to not just stop and smell some roses but to LOOK and learn.  As God takes care of them, God will take care of those who put Him first!!!

Verse to DATE the Word on June 28 (6/28) is Matthew 6:28. Matthew 6:28 says, “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;” (worth reading 29 and 30; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field….will he not much more clothe you,)

    Continue Strong with JESUS FIRST,
And remember to DATE THE WORD
  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 27 (6/27) is Luke 6:27

“But I (Jesus) say to you who hear: Love your enemies
do good to those who hate you,” – Luke 6:27
    A VERY DIFFERENT RESPONSE

As Jesus teaches about relationships, He gives one of the most “on the contrary” responses we will learn.  Instead of returning hatred toward those who hate you – hate even to the point of being an enemy – we are called to show love, showing love with tangible actions.  This is a very different response as we don’t look to do good to those who do bad things to us.  Those who hurt us should be hurt back.  Our thinking is we don’t get mad we get even.  But as a believer seeking to follow and obey the teachings of Christ our response to those who hurt us and hate us is to go through the filter of Luke 6:27 and we now respond to hate with love and meanness with kindness.
At this point, you might be ready to say, “You have to be kidding.”  You might even go so far as to say this is totally ridiculous.  You are probably replying inwardly that “If someone hurts me, I am going to hurt them back.  If they hate me, I am going to hate them back.”  Yet as we listen and learn from Jesus we learn He wants us to treat our enemies very DIFFERENTLY than they are treating us.

As believers, the EXPECTED RESPONSE is DOING GOOD to those who are DOING EVIL to us.

Going a little deeper, the Apostle Paul would later write in Romans 12:21 “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with GOOD (doing them good).”  Verse 21 is the conclusion to his teaching which is definitely a very different response to those doing us harm.  Romans 12:17 says, “Repay no one evil for evil but give thought to DO what is honorable in the sight of all.”  Romans 12:20 says, “To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink;”

As believers, the EXPECTED RESPONSE is DOING GOOD to those who are DOING EVIL to us.

So, our verse for 6/27 from Luke 6:27 which says, “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,” calls us to RESPOND VERY DIFFERENTLY.

Challenging? You better believe it! But then, living differently always is.

Verse to DATE the Word on June 27 (6/27) is Luke 6:27. Luke 6:27 says, “But I (Jesus) say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,”

Please remember that the time a person needs love the most is when they deserve it the least.

Continue Strong putting into practice the teachings of Christ,

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 26 (6/26) is Matthew 6:26

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” – Matthew 6:26
    Are you a Bird WATCHER?

Do you take time daily to LOOK at the birds?  Are you a bird watcher? Did you know that is a question on the census and as of May 2023 45 million Americans identify themselves as “BIRDERS” or birdwatchers?  Based on our verse of Matthew 6:26 for June 26 (6/26) today should be NATIONAL BIRD WATCHERS DAY!  And based on today’s verse, everyone, especially those who are PRONE to WORRYING, should be a bird watcher!

Looking at what Jesus taught about looking at the birds of the air we must remember that Jesus is pointing us to LOOK AT THE BIRDS OF THE AIR because He has told us to NOT WORRY ABOUT OUR LIFE.  He said for us to not even worry about what we will eat or drink or have for clothing, which are the NECESSITIES of LIFE. Matthew 6:25 says, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

In order to CALM the worrier down that they really don’t have to worry, Jesus says, LOOK AT THE BIRDS in order to see HOW GOD CARES FOR THEM and if He cares for them then SURELY, HE WILL CARE for YOU!  As one looks at birds one will NOT see birds planting a field of grain to later harvest.  They will see birds constantly finding food provided by God!

BTW – I like visuals so I have a bird feeder outside where I can see birds. It is my Matt. 6:26 reminder that if His eye is on the sparrow, I know He watches me!!

Also -just a reminder; Too much concentration (worrying) on the personal cares of life can choke out your commitment to Christ. (Luke 8:14).  Fear and worrying lead to unfruitfulness.

One last thought on bird watching.  I encourage you to mark in your Bible Psalm 147:9 for it says about God that “He gives to the beast its food, and to the young ravens that cry.”

Verse to DATE the Word on June 26 (6/26) is Matthew 6:26.  It says, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

So, for June 26 (6/26) do some bird watching and remember you are more valuable to God than the bird!

Continue Strong knowing how valuable you are to God,
And remember to DATE the Word
  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 25 (6/25) is Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you
will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food
and the body more than clothing?” – Matthew 6:25
A Challenging Command – Do Not WORRY about your life!

As we consider our life that is really in two worlds, we find ourselves so often in a tug-of-war between the PRESENT EARTHLY MOMENT and the FUTURE ETERNAL MOMENT.  The present moment can be all-consuming as we see so many things we don’t have or may not have. This leads to anxiety or worry.  The need for physical nourishment and protection takes center stage and can easily, yes, very easily squeeze out the ability for spiritual nourishment and involvement.  The desire to survive consumes the mind.

Jesus comes along and challenges this mindset of the PHYSICAL being first.  As spiritual beings, the priority order is to be SEEKING FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD!  Thus, He confronts one of the most basic actions every one of us does: He states, “DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR LIFE.”  (Sometimes you read something that Jesus says and you want to reply back, “Are You serious?” This is one of those times!)

He not only says DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR LIFE, He adds to not worry about the basic, no, the essential elements of life telling us to not worry about what we will eat or drink nor worry about the clothes to wear.   Now this has moved the command to not worry to a very CHALLENGING level.  Making sure we have something to eat or drink or having clothing are essentials.  Yet JESUS does not want us to worry about these life essentials.

When Jesus says, “Do not WORRY” He is saying do not let these things consume the mind to the point that it divides the mind.  A divided mind will be a paralyzed mind, meaning it can’t function.  I have a feeling you have been there before (and maybe there now).   The fears of this day are so great you find that you can’t think straight.  You just don’t know WHAT TO DO!

This is not how Jesus wants us to live.  Don’t miss His last statement of this verse:  IS NOT LIFE MORE (please lock on) MORE than food and the body MORE than clothing?   You are MORE than the physical.  Life is so much MORE than this temporal, earthly life.  You have a soul and you have a SPIRITUAL life.  The spiritual life looks at life from an eternal perspective, not the temporal.

As one approaches Matthew 6:25 with the challenge to NOT WORRYING ABOUT YOUR LIFE one has to know that this is setting one up for the greatest challenge where Jesus will say in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Is JESUS FIRST in your life?  Does spiritual nourishment and involvement take precedence over physical nourishment?  Are you focused on doing what God desires?

Verse to DATE the Word on June 25 (6/25) is Matthew 6:25.  It says, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

How does DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR LIFE challenge your thinking?

  • Verse to DATE the Word on June 24 (6/24) is Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and
love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and money.” – Matthew 6:24
CHOOSE THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE

Jesus is preaching/teaching in Matthew 6.  The chapters of Matthew 5, 6, and 7 are called the Sermon on the Mount.  There will be several times in His sermon that He will bring the message to a decision point.  As we get to this portion of Matthew 6, He is headed to a call for each person to seek the kingdom of God FIRST.  (Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

As Jesus preaches, He knows there is tremendous competition for our hearts.  We can easily be LOVING a lot of things, a lot of wrong things!  For Jesus, our relationship with God is to be preeminent – supreme – above everything else. Knowing that one of the greatest competitors of our hearts is money, Jesus gets really personal and direct.  He says we must know that money and things can control and even consume us.  The love of and the desire to have more and more money causes a person to have wrong priorities.  Rather than seeking God, this love for money will squeeze God and God’s desires out of one’s life.

Personal and direct Jesus says YOU CAN NOT SERVE TWO MASTERS!

So, which will it be?  Who will be first?  The Lord? or Your family? Your finances? Your personal needs?  Your personal freedom?  Your recreation? Your work?  And the list can go on and on, can it not?   As Elijah said in 1 Kings 18:21 “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”  WHO will be FIRST?

Maybe today you need to realign your priorities as you cannot serve two masters!  FIRST THINGS MUST BE FIRST and if you are a believer then JESUS IS TO BE FIRST!

Verse to DATE the Word on June 24 (6/24) is Matthew 6:24. It says, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

What adjustments do you need to make based on the teaching from Matthew 6:24?

BTW – I hope you know that money makes a horrible master.
